Novel Techniques to Assess the Efficiency of Masonry Infills

April 28, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Civil-academic-lecture

The Department of Civil Engineering is organising an academic lecture on “Application of Non-Contact Full-Field Strain Measurement Techniques to Assess the Performance of Masonry Infills” on April 28, 2023. The lecture will be delivered by Dr Syed Humayun Basha, Associate Professor, College of Civil Engineering, Huaqiao University, China. Dr Basha will elaborate on the application of novel techniques to review the behaviour of Masonry Infills.

Join for a highly insightful session!

Abstract

This lecture will discuss the out-of-plane (OOP) behaviour of traditional solid clay brick masonry-infilled reinforced concrete frames for different slenderness ratios, bonding patterns, and connection details to assess the development of arching mechanism, infill-frame interaction, and failure mechanisms. It will highlight the full-field strain and crack width analysis, failure progression, and out-of-plane deformation characteristics using a non-contact 3D-DIC (digital image correlation) technique. The session will elaborate on the experimental investigations ascertaining higher capacity, deformation ability and energy dissipation characteristics of full-brick thick lower slenderness ratio (13.4) specimens over half-brick thick slender (28.8) specimens. Moreover, the role of tie bars in enhancing the stability of the wall against out-of-plane failure will also be discussed.

About the Speaker

Dr Syed Humayun Basha is an Associate Professor, at the College of Civil Engineering, Huaqiao University, China. He obtained his Bachelor of Engineering (Silver Medal) in Civil Engineering from Osmania University, India, in May 2009. He has completed his MTech and PhD in Civil (Structural Engineering) from the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati. He briefly worked as an Ad hoc faculty at the National Institute of Technology, Calicut, India, before joining as a post-doctoral research fellow at Huaqiao University, China.

Dr Basha has published 18 Journal articles in various internationally highly reputed SCI journals and presented his research at various International/ National conferences. He is currently presiding over many scientific research projects, including the Natural Science Foundation of Fujian Province, High-Level Talent Introduction (Dept. of Science & Technology) Huaqiao University, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Participant). His research interests include optimised additive manufacturing (3d printing of structures), earthquake-resistant design of structures, seismic resilience, alternative construction materials, and non-destructive testing.
