  • Additive Manufacturing: Fundamentals, Processes, and Applications August 17, 2021

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at SRM University – AP organises a webinar titled “Additive Manufacturing: Fundamentals, Processes, and Applications” on Aug 19, 2021, at 5:30 pm. The lecture by Prof P. M. Pandey, Professor at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi aims to educate the audience on how additive manufacturing (AM) will transform manufacturing in the future.

Additive manufacturing (AM) technology has been recognized as an emerging technology for the direct fabrication of physical objects from the developed computer-aided design (CAD) models. AM techniques make real physical objects by adding materials in a layer-by-layer fashion rather than removing the material. The layered manufacturing abilities of AM technologies offer the building of parts with geometric and material complexities. Numerous AM techniques are simple and flexible that allow easy production of complex and customized objects. Through intensive research over the past two decades, significant progress has been made in the development and commercialization of new and innovative AM processes. Further, numerous practical applications in aerospace, automotive, biomedical, energy and other fields have been discovered.

    About the speaker:
Prof Pulak M Pandey is currently serving as a Professor in IIT Delhi. Prof Pandey completed his PhD in Additive Manufacturing/3D Printing from IIT Kanpur in 2003. He diversified his research areas in the field of micro and nano finishing, micro-deposition and continued working in 3D Printing. He has supervised 39 PhDs and more than 36 MTech theses in the last 10 years and has filed 21 Indian patent applications. He has approximately 185 international journal papers and 45 international/national refereed conference papers to his credit. These papers with an h-index of 38 have received 6032 citations. He also received the Highly Commended Paper Award by Rapid Prototyping Journal for the paper “Fabrication of three-dimensional open porous regular structure of PA 2200 for enhanced strength of scaffold using selective laser sintering”. He is a recipient of the Outstanding Young Faculty Fellowship (IIT Delhi) sponsored by Kusuma Trust, Gibraltar, and J.M. Mahajan outstanding teacher award of IIT Delhi. His students have won GYTI (Gandhian Young Technological Innovation Award) in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2020.

All are invited to join this lecture on August 19, 2021, at 5:30 pm to gain an insightful overview of AM technologies- the processes, their characteristics, and applications.

  • Towards a better understanding of airborne maritime surveillance August 13, 2021

Airborne maritime and pollution surveillance plays a crucial role in the defence sector for safeguarding the coastline, ISRR, EEZ as well as pollution control, piracy and maritime terrorism. The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at SRM University-AP organises a lecture titled “Airborne Maritime Surveillance” on August 21, 2021, at 4.00 pm as part of the Departmental Lecture Series. Dr Reena Sharma, Scientist G, Centre for Airborne Systems (Ministry of Defence R&D, DRDO) will be the guest speaker at the event.

There is a necessity to monitor the vast Indian, coastline, Indian Search and Rescue Region (ISRR) and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) on the map of India. The airborne surveillance is carried out by mounting various surveillance and imaging sensors onboard, an aircraft making it a Maritime Patrol Aircraft or Multi-Mission Maritime Aircraft System. Some of the major sensors onboard comprise of AESA Based Maritime Patrol Radar, Electro-Optics/Infra-Red sensor, Pollution Surveillance Suite, Automatic Identification System and others. The sensor’s output is integrated to provide a maritime situational picture displayed to the operators, thereby providing them with a maritime situational awareness. In this talk, Dr Reena will be addressing the above facets of airborne maritime surveillance.

All are invited to this insightful session on August 21, 2021, at 4.00 pm.

  • Hands-on IoT with MATLAB and ThingSpeak August 5, 2021

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) at SRM University-AP is hosting the third edition of the ongoing online Workshop Series “Learn & Earn: Hands-On Science & Technology (HOST)” to learn and explore the latest techniques in the field of science and technology. The workshop series-III, titled “IoT Hands-on with MATLAB & ThingSpeak”, will be held on August 10, 2021. Mr Ramana Anchuri from MathWorks will engage the participants of the workshop from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.

The main objective of organising the workshop on IoT is to impart practical lessons on the following topics: a) Leveraging low-cost hardware for IoT, b) Setting up ThingSpeak Channel c) Basic Hardware Integration such as Blinking an LED, Reading sensor data and acting on data, d) IoT Analytics using ThingSpeak like Apps and Data Explorers.

    About the Speaker:
Ramana Anchuri is an Engineer from the Education Team at The MathWorks, working with academia in India. He completed his undergraduate studies in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and a Masters in Power Electronics from JNTU Hyderabad. Prior to joining The MathWorks, he worked in academia and in industry. He worked with KPIT Pune as a senior software engineer where he was responsible for control design for automotive engine systems, and with CYIENT Limited as a senior software engineer responsible for developing, verifying and validating aircraft engine control systems. He is passionate about teaching and learning, and his current interests include Power Electronics and Control Design, Model-Based Design and Code Generation.

Prerequisites for a highly effective workshop session:

    • All participants should have a MathWorks account, if they haven’t already – follow the instructions in the attached doc for account creation.
    • All participants must complete the MATLAB Onramp & Simulink Onramp prior to the session. Each of these free Onramps typically takes 2-3 hours and is self-paced. Participants get a completion certificate from MathWorks for each of these courses.
    • Since we have hands-on activity during the session, every participant needs to join with a working laptop with access to MATLAB installed version/MATLAB Online – They need not have hardware at their end.
    • For those participants who don’t have a license to access MATLAB, they can request a trial.
