About the Speaker
Prof. Sreerup Raychaudhuri works on the physics of elementary particles and their interactions. He is a Ph.D. from the University of Calcutta and worked as a postdoc first at TIFR and then at CERN, Geneva. He taught Physics at IIT Kanpur for several years before joining TIFR, where he is now a Professor of Theoretical Physics and Dean (Administration). His research interests are interfacing theory with experiments, especially in the physics of electroweak interactions. He is also interested in the popularisation and history of science.
Abstract
Over the past twelve decades, we have gathered an incredible amount of information about the world at tiny length scales going down from a nano-metre – the size of a small molecule – to the order of an atto-metre – a billion times smaller – which is the limit of today’s experiments. We have found the most amazing structures and interactions which could not have been dreamed of in earlier times. We will trace the story of this great adventure from an empirical viewpoint and ask if we have finally unravelled the ultimate building blocks of the Universe.
