In the Department of Literature and Languages, SRM University, AP, literature is imparted as a skill, language as a science and the pedagogy is an art. With the revamping of the entire curricula, the Department has incorporated several modifications in terms of content, delivery and assessment.
These changes will provide the scope for meaningful interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary engagement with literature, language and other communicative skills, that will prove beneficial for students in the long run.
The BA English Programme aims to equip individuals with the ability to excel in diverse contexts, including academic, professional, and social settings. It fosters strong communication skills, critical thinking, and persuasive abilities. This course is designed to prepare participants for research pursuits while maintaining flexibility across various areas of expertise. We offer two options within the program: BA English (Regular) and BA English (Honours with Research).
For students seeking a comprehensive discourse in English language and literature, the Regular program is ideal. Over three years, students will complete 136 credits, which encompass ability enhancement, value-added, and skill enhancement courses, in addition to core courses. The first semester is common to all BA programs within the school (SLASS). From the fourth to the sixth semesters, students can choose core electives from a catalog of courses. Furthermore, in accordance with NEP 2020, the BA English (Regular) program includes a mandatory summer internship that students must undertake during the summer break after their second year (in the fourth semester). Upon completing the program, students will have received holistic training in the English language and literature, enabling them to speak authoritatively on English-related topics.
For students interested in research, the department offers an extended four-year program. In addition to the courses taught in the Regular program, students pursuing BA English (Honours with Research) will complete an additional 24 credits, totaling 160 credits. The additional year focuses on research, providing insights and training in research methodology within the field. Courses such as Genre Criticism and Literature Review and Methodology are included. Students will also be required to submit a dissertation of 16 credits, spread across the seventh and eighth semesters. The skills acquired during this period will undoubtedly serve as valuable foundations for future impactful research endeavors.
Our department also offers minors for students from other disciplines. To obtain a minor in English, students must successfully complete four English courses (each worth 3 credits). Currently, the Department offers minors in three tracks:
