Applications are invited for the post of Junior Research Fellow under the DST-SERB sponsored core research project (CRG/2020/003295).

Name of the position: Junior Research Fellow

Number of post: 1

Title of the project: Mechanistic understanding of bacterial cytoskeleton inhibition by antibiotics and novel bacteriophage proteins

Brief overview of the project: MreB is a bacterial actin homolog and a drug target for antibiotic development. Over these years, four antibiotics specifically targeting MreB have been developed. However, how bacteria respond to antibiotic-mediated MreB disruption has not been understood at a global scale. In this project, we will use global approaches including RNA sequencing and transposon mutagenesis to uncover pathways mediating bacterial adaptation to MreB inhibition. Additionally, the project also involves identification of bacteriophage-encoded MreB inhibitors and study them as novel antibacterial molecules. Overall, the proposed project will provide vital information on how bacteria adapt to novel antibiotics and will lead to the development of novel antibacterial drugs from bacteriophages.

Duration: 1 year (extendable to 3 years based on performance)

Essential qualifications/experience: M.Sc./ BTech or equal degree (First class) in any type of branch of life sciences. Experience in molecular biology, microbiology and genomics is desirable. Candidates qualifying any NET exams including CSIR-JRF/LS/ICMR-NET/DBT/UGC-NET/GATE are eligible to apply for the Junior Research Fellow position.
