Microbiome mediated fate and transformation of man released nano-pollutants Human exposure to engineered nanomaterials is inevitable and impacts on the distribution, fate and transport to host and host cells are beginning to be addressed. However, less well recognized and explored are their effects on our microbial flora; the microbiome and the indirect effects this could have on human health and disease. The present proposal will fill this knowledge gap by evaluating the impacts of the most widely used nanomaterials on the mouse gut microbiome and potential health concerns. Correlations between gut microflora response and the physical and chemical properties of nanoparticles will be sought. This information will provide a fonndation for understanding the probable fates of these materials in the environment, for guiding the development of effective nanoparticle-based technologies, and for understanding how microbiome adapt to theses exposures.

Molecular links between nutrition, reproduction and aging Long chain fatty acids have various functions in metazoan physiology. Fatty acid transporters localize to sub- cellular compartments upon certain stimulus like insulin. Expression of these proteins changes with age. This in turn may affect fatty acid metabolism and thus have a role in age related conditions. Further research is required to understand the role of lipid metabolism in aging and the contribution of fatty acid transporters. The research gaps that we would like to address are: What are the functions of fatty acid activation proteins in C. elegans? How do they affect C. elegans lifespan? How do they affect lipid metabolism (intracellular TAG formation, free fatty acid accumulation, etc. Do these proteins contribute to energy homeostasis by altering the mitochondrial function? Is aging a function of lipid metabolism? Can lipid metabolism be controlled to preserve health and longevity in aging?

Discovery of CRISPR-Cas silencing proteins using functional metagenomics The CRISPR-Cas genome defense systems of bacteria has been developed as a revolutionary technology for targeted gene editing at an unprecedented scale. However, the technology suffers from a major limitation due to its off-target effects. Anti-CRISPRs, which are naturally existing small protein inhibitors of CRISPR-Cas, are widely used for controlling CRISPR-Cas off-target effects. Due to its ‘safe gene editing’ applications, anti-CRISPRs are promising and their discovery is an active area of research. The project involves discovery of novel anti-CRISPRs capable of inactivating specific CRISPR-Cas proteins and characterizing their mechanism of action. Towards this goal, we will employ metagenomics, genetics and biochemical approaches. Our research will open new possibilities in the field of CRISPR-Cas technology.

Metal-catalyzed new cross-coupling reactions via C-H bond activation and Metallacycle formation We would like to develop new catalytic system for the selective functionalization of alkanes at terminal methyl group. We strongly believe that selective functionalization of alkanes using metal complexes as catalysts via C(sp3)‒H activation of alkanes could be highly advantageous for the construction of various C‒C, and C‒X bonds in one pot. Similarly, metallacycle triggered cross coupling reaction could be highly appealing for the first row transition metals as catalyst. These new synthetic methodologies could be an excellent complement to C‒H bond activation reactions and will considerably extend this challenging field of research to another extent.

Theoretical Insights on the critical factors that influence the performance of non-fullerene organic solar cells The project aims to improve the performance of non-fullerene organic solar cells (OSCs) by designing new donor/acceptor materials as well as modifying the existing ones. The state-of-the-art computational methods would be employed to understand the molecular interactions and degree of mixing, for different combinations of newly designed and existing donor: acceptor blends. The relationship between solubility, morphology, and performance of non-fullerene OSCs will be established using computational protocols at different levels of sophistication.

Development of Nano-Engineered Blue-Emitting Blinking Suppressed 'Giant' Quantum Dots The application of colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) to a range of light-emission technologies from solid-state lighting to single-photon sources is limited due to blinking and photobleaching. Our approach to blinking (and photobleaching) suppression is to grow a thick epitaxial shell of a higher bandgap (Type-I core/shell) onto the emitting QD core. The resulting thick-shell or giant QDs (g-QDs) have exhibited dramatic suppression in blinking, photobleaching and non-radiative AR at red and near-infrared wavelengths. It has remained an outstanding challenge to synthesize blue-emitting non-blinking g-QDs. In this project we proposes to investigate the blinking properties of blue-emitting g-QDs

Methane Emission from Tropical Aquatic Networks: Elucidating the underpinning mechanisms and landscape-level drivers The atmospheric concentration of methane (CH4) - a highly potent greenhouse gas (GHG) - has tripled since 1750s. However, estimating the magnitude and variability of diverse sources and sinks of CH4 is still a major challenge, particularly for natural sources which are responsible for 1/3rd of total CH4 emissions. Despite the growing recognition on the role of inland waters in global CH4 budget, paucity of data to represent complex aquatic networks, particularly from tropics, and the lack of mechanistic understanding on the processes shaping CH4 emissions make accurate quantification and upscaling of global inland water emissions difficult. Here we assess the extent and regulation of CH4 saturation and emissions in the Krishna River Network (KRN, India), which span across a watershed area of 258948 km2. With its highly variable topography, land use pattern, and subsequent variability in nutrients and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) inputs, KRN provide a unique and ideal environment to examine the effect of “eutrophication” (increasing aquatic productivity due to increasing nutrient concentration) and “browning” (increasing DOC concentration) - two major process that are known to augment inland water CH4 emissions - on tropical inland water CH4 dynamics. Our approach integrates mechanistic understanding on CH4 production and oxidation to empirical models for basin-wide CH4 dynamics in relation to landscape features. The resulting empirical models will be used to upscale and place Indian inland waters in the tropical aquatic CH4 emissions in an unprecedented way.

Concomitantly, systems like metal free surfaces (Silicon Carbide), doped graphene, doped C-60, modified boron nitride surface etc. will be designed to solve above mentioned issues for complete CO conversion without poisoning the active surfaces. So here we will mainly focus on the gas solid reactions (2CO + O₂ - CO₂) considering only metal-free catalyst.

Probing Charge Transport in Molecular Junctions with Impedance Spectroscopy and Transition Voltage Spectroscopy Approach Investigation of charge transport at molecular scale is important for advance fundamental understanding and to improve the performance of devices for applications ranging from energy storage, green energy, to device miniaturization. The role of chemical and supramolecular properties of the molecules on charge transport should be well examined if one has to design molecular junctions of unique electrical characteristics. With the above, in this project we are exploring a universal structural-function relationship for molecules in terms of electrical transport. We also modulate electronic transport across supramolecular ensembles with electrical gating to find out the origin of quantum transport in macromolecules. With these understanding we will develop molecular junction-based diagnostics technologies, which covers electrical as well as photonic detection methodologies coupled with microfluidic sample manipulation.

Evaluation of intrinsic piezoelectric coefficients and strain engineering near the morphotropic phase boundary in Pb-free oxides We aim to develop Pb-free ceramic oxide materials by strain engineering at the morphotropic phase boundary for piezoceramic applications. The proposed work will focus on designing a bismuth-rich perovskite oxide with tetragonal/Orthorhombic structure and then form a PZT-like morphotropic phase boundary. Further, strain engineering near the morphotropic phase boundary guided by Rayleigh analysis would aim to achieve Pb-free materials with large intrinsic piezoelectric response and higher Curie temperature.

Ion Beam Modification of Two Dimensional(2D) Layered Materials Heterostructures: Defect Engineering and Device Performances Here we propose to focus on the large area growth and sequential integration of 2D transition metal Oxides (TMOs), dichalcogenides (TMDs), carbides (MXene) and its systematic defect engineering at the surfaces and interfaces by ion irradiation/implantation thereby modifying their local electronic structures and monitor the device performances. By manipulating the parameters of ion beams (energies, species, fluences, incident angles, etc.), the modified 2D materials may possess novel properties, which are unprecedented in pristine ones. Promising applications based on these 2D materials with ion beam tailored features may be realized in the field of smart electronic devices.

Development of Fast Fluoride Ion Conducting Solid Electrolytes for Rechargeable Solid State Fluoride Ion Batteries The objective of the project is to develop suitable fast ion conducting materials exhibiting high fluoride ionic conductivity at ambient temperature by engineering the structure of the earlier known materials. The transport behavior and electrochemical stability of these electrolyte materials will be investigated mainly by impedance spectroscopy for applications in all-solid state fluoride ion batteries. The battery characteristics of the best chosen solid electrolytes will be tested combing with different metal/metal fluoride electrode pairs.

A Scalable Secure Architecture Model for privacy and Performance in IoT In the present smart world, we are using the Internet of Things (IoT) for different domains at different places for greater services but at the same time, these devices are raising data security and privacy concerns. As these devices are constrained in nature, they are lacking in self-defence from the cyber attacks (CA). At the same time, their presence is increasing on the Internet which requires high bandwidths and may result in network breakdown. In order to manage and provide security to these many objects is a big challenge for the industry. Due to this, we need new security mechanisms (SM), protocols, and architectures. The objective of the proposal is to highlight a novel security architecture to support data security, privacy and scalability in the IoT automation system. The proposed architecture includes blockchains (BC) for providing tamper-proof transactions, public ledgers, and smart contracts (SC) for automation. The burden of decentralized (DC) blockchains on sensors and actuators are eliminated by shifting it to high-end devices. This system uses SC to allow end-users in establishing a secure interaction with IoT devices and providing access control mechanism, IoT device authentication in a fully DC environment.

Studies upon Modification of High Entropy alloy for Thermal Barrier Coating Applications The aim of the investigation is to produce High entropy alloy as bond coat material for TBC application. The alloy will be prepared by mechanical activated synthesis. The as prepared alloy will be examined for its structure, morphology and phase transition temperature. The sintered alloy will be subjected to oxidation up to 1050oC and characterized for the formation of (Thermally Grown Oxide) TGO scale layer (morphology, composition, thickness, growth and stability). After optimizing the composition the HEA will be coated on Ni based substrate by High Velocity Oxy Fuel Coating (HVOF). The said coating will be investigated for scale adhesiveness, thermal spallation, interdiffusion of elements, constituents of the TGO scale etc.

SRM-Amara Raja Center for Energy Storage Devices The theme of the centre is to carry out the application and product-oriented interdisciplinary research in Lithium-ion and beyond-lithium-ion rechargeable battery technologies that could be supportive for the future customer demands in the E-Mobility and grid-storage sectors. The key objectives of the centre are development of the fast-charging capable low-cost battery electronic materials in the large-scale using economical manufacturing methods, high ionic conductivity solid electrolytes, industrial-scale fabrication of porous battery electrodes using the ‘cutting-edge’ Additive Manufacturing (3D) printing technology, and custom-designed efficient thermal and electronic control protocols for assembled battery packs.
