Department of Media Studies

Media Studies is an interdisciplinary domain that draws from liberal arts, social science and humanities streams. Media and mediatic forms exercise an overarching dominance on personal and social lives in the current era in ways that are simply unprecedented. As the influence and power of media and communication technology entrenches itself deeper and deeper in our everyday worlds, it is absolutely significant to bring meticulous academic analysis to understand and explore the meanings and impacts of its power to organize human sociality.

At SRM University-AP, we are keen to take a leading step in this direction by establishing an Interdisciplinary Center for Media Studies that will be housed within Easwari School of Liberal Arts. The center will develop and design research projects and seek collaborative proposals from like-minded departments and Schools within SRM AP and outside institutions (such as NID, Guntur) to carry out this research. Most importantly, the center will offer courses for students to be able to opt for a major in Media studies at Easwari School of Liberal Arts. Given the popularity of this major at many universities in the country, we fully expect that there will be a good demand for a media studies major at SRM AP.

One of the components that is crucial for this Center is the establishment of a Media Lab. The latter will enable students to have a hands-on, immersive experience of media technologies and practices. In other words, the aim is to provide the students not only with theoretical, critical knowledge about the functioning of Media and its impact of society, but also train them as operators of these technologies with a deep, experiential grounding.

Message From Head of the Department
