MSc Molecular Biology and Biotechnology

Introduction to the Programme

The Department of Biological Sciences aims in empowering students interested in advanced and thrust areas of modern biology. To this end, the department of biology is offering a two-year MSc programme on Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. Students participating in the programme will be taught the fundamentals of biology and modern laboratory techniques. The MSc Molecular Biology and Biotechnology programme has been carefully designed to meet the needs of the next generation of biologists to prepare them to be a resourceful and much-appreciated workforce in their chosen field. This two-year MSc programme is an advanced programme comprising four semesters with three semesters of theory and practical and one semester entirely focussed on a research project. Upon successful completion of this programme, students will be well equipped to venture into research careers, find suitable jobs in bio-industries, become policymakers and biology teachers at schools, colleges, and universities.

Aims and Objectives of the Programme

The programme aims to provide lecture series, laboratory experiments, and research projects for a better understanding of the basic principles of biological concepts, techniques, experimental approaches, and interpretation skills. The programme will enhance the skills necessary for employability in bio-industries, research and teaching at higher educational institutes. The students will be trained to be scientifically sound with enhanced research, analytical and communication skills.

The objectives of the programme are to:

  • Provide a better understanding of the fundamentals of biology focusing on thrust areas of modern biology
  • Develop core competencies on critical thinking skills, hypothesising, and solving problems
  • Provide intensive laboratory training in designing and executing biological experiments and critical analysis of the results
  • Develop skills in reading, writing, and communicating original scientific research articles
  • Improve the employability of the students and enable them to venture into new areas of biology
