Applications are invited for the position of Project Assistant (PA) under the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB - Govt. of India)-Sponsored Research Project entitled “Vector Vortex Beams and their Scattering for Communication Applications” (Reference No: SRG/2019/000857)
Project Summary:The purpose of this project is to implement an efficient and simple method for generating the vector vortex beams using polarization dependent spatial light modulator. Then, we use the vector vortex beams and their scattering for developing a free space communication link. We choose vector vortices for optical communication as they can enhance the amount of encoded data compared to conventional FSOC using polarization. For the generation of vector vortices I will mainly focus on using S-wave plate, designed for manipulating the spatial polarization. We will study propagation of vector vortices and their superposition states through the atmosphere to check their robustness and stability against atmospheric turbulence, which is essential for their use in communication. During our study, we also optically characterize the atmospheric quantities such as refractive index for a better understanding of the light interaction as the vector beams are very sensitive to the polarization manipulation. We will also develop an efficient optical setup for differentiating the vector vortices and their superposition for decrypting the information at the receiver station.

Description of the project:
Methane (CH4) is a highly potent greenhouse gas (GHG) with about 34-times more global warming potential than carbon dioxide (CO2) over 100-year horizon. The atmospheric CH4 levels has tripled since 1750s, yet the accurate allocation of relative contribution of diverse sources of atmospheric CH4 is still a matter of debate. Of the one-third of total CH4 emissions attributed to natural sources, emissions from freshwater aquatic systems are substantial. However, large uncertainties exist in the global freshwater CH4 emission estimates currently due to the paucity of data to represent complex aquatic networks, particularly from tropical Asia. This project aims to fill this knowledge gap by deriving mechanistic understanding on the processes shaping CH4 emissions from tropical Krishna River network by conducting series of field campaigns and experiments. Resulting data will be used to integrate mechanistic understanding on microbial processes (CH4 production and oxidation) to empirical models for basin-wide CH4 dynamics. This project is expected to provide hitherto unestablished links between landscape features and aquatic CH4 emissions which in turn will be used to upscale and place tropical systems in the global inland water CH4 emissions.

PROJECT SUMMARY
The availability of complete genome sequence along with powerful molecular and genetic tools has made the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as one of the widely studied model organism in the field of developmental biology, neuroscience, and adult lifespan. Several studies indicate that sensors and regulators of cell metabolism modulate organismal aging. Signaling mechanisms, such as insulin/IGF (ILS), mTOR, AMPK, sirtuins, and the dietary restriction (DR) pathways have been largely implicated in organismal lifespan. DR is one of the robust non-genetic intervention shown to positively regulate healthspan and lifespan in many species. However, lifespan increasing effect of DR is often accompanied by impaired reproduction. With the advantage of short lifespan and availability of powerful genetic tools in C. elegans, we would like to focus on addressing following two main questions:
Does DR protects germline stem cells (GSC) and hence contribute to fitness later when conditions are favorable?
Do nuclear hormone receptors (NHRs) integrate signals from known pathways that mediate C. elegans longevity?
Qualified and interested candidates may send their curriculum vitae by e-mail to manjunatha.t@srmap.edu.in on or before deadline.
