October 5, 2018, Boston, Massachusetts: SRM AP Vice Chancellor Dr. Jamshed Bharucha joined delegates from international universities, Harvard leadership and governing board members in the academic procession at the inauguration of Harvard’s 29th President, Lawrence S. Bacow.
Inauguration of Harvard President Lawrence Bacow
In his inaugural address Lawrence Bacow spoke of the importance of a liberal arts education at a time when not just truth but facts themselves are increasingly under assault.
Of the event Dr. Bharucha said, “It was a distinct honour to be the only delegate from an Indian university. The academic procession marched in order of the date of founding of each university. SRM University, Amaravati, was founded in 2017, so it was exciting to be among the newest institutions.”

One predominant theme in his address was that higher education is a public good worthy of support. He also spoke of the role of an educational institution to ‘repair the world’ through students’ involvement in public service. “President Bacow gave a powerful speech,” said Dr. Bharucha. “He urged universities to prepare their students not to just to do well in their lives, but also to do good in the world.”
Considering the vast influence that Harvard University has on public policy the inauguration was a significant event for the future of higher education in USA and the world.
