Prof. Jugal Kishore Delivers Lecture on Polynomials
June 6 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm
The Department of Mathematics is organising a Departmental Distinguished Lecture by Prof. Jugal K Vema. The lecture on Real roots of real polynomials, the real nullstellensatz and Hilbert’s 17th problem will discuss topics on counting real roots of real polynomials, including:
(1) The Pedersen-Roy-Szpirglass theorem about counting real roots of real polynomials
(2) The classical theorem of C. Hermite for counting real roots of a real polynomial.
(3) The real nullstellensatz and Hilbert’s seventeenth problem
About the Speaker:
Prof. Jugal K Verma was a visiting professor in the Mathematics department at IIT Gandhinagar. He retired as a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at IIT Bombay. During his time at IIT Bombay, he served as a visiting professor in various institutes and universities across the world. He was the Dean of Faculty Affairs, Institute Chair Professor, and Head of the National Centre for Mathematics at IIT Bombay. He was selected as a fellow of various scientific academies, such as the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, National Academy of Sciences, and Indian National Science Academy. He received many awards, including the Ramanujan Memorial Award Lecture from the Indian Mathematical Society, the IIT Bombay Excellence in Teaching Award (Mathematics), the S P Sukhatme Institute Excellence in Teaching Award, and the S C Bhattacharya award for pure sciences at IIT Bombay.
