He provided an insight about how the courses are designed and the history of the MIT Open Course Ware. He presented the vastness of these courses engulfing subjects like Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.

Next, the students put forth their experiences about the MITx courses. As answer to one of the question, he assured the students that these courses will help build their careers. Kirkey Delouy, the Project manager of MIT and Glenda S. Stump, the Education Officer of MIT also shared their experiences and gave valuable suggestions.

Later during the day, a workshop to the faculty members was delivered by the MITx team. During interactions, the team expressed their strong confidence in the active learning mechanisms adopted at MIT. Since some of the faculty members of SRM AP-Amravati have already undergone training at MIT and subsequently implemented some of the exciting active learning exercises here, they expressed that this approach provides a faster and much enhanced understanding of core technical concepts among students and paves the way for stronger and in-depth learning outcomes.

On the afternoon of 15th November, 2017 a very special talk on ‘industry Connect’ was held in the atrium of SRM-Amaravati. The honorary guest for the afternoon was Parameshwar Babu, Managing Director, Param Projects Private Limited, Chennai. The main focus of his speech was to be connected with industries and learn their working.

He started his speech with a brief description of his own industry ‘Param Industries Private Limited’ and the beginning of his company by struggling and developing his own career. They introduced commercially viable Java products prior to 1999. He introduced all with the cycle of employee and employer. He also described the facts or problems that take place when someone starts doing their own business or entrepreneurship such as: what stages people cross when they start their new ventures. He informed the audiences that they are working to promote the growth of work based education and how they are using the nano-technology to improve their work. He notified that they are heading for the possible outcomes of this tech-entrepreneur ecosystem from the fresher of all over the India and also he motivated everyone to be a part of the entrepreneur world. Industries look forward to have good and skilled freshers to work together, so he said everyone and motivated to be a good starter of their own business.

Joining an industry takes a lot of hard work and skills. This is what the world is heading towards.

Talk on CoE – SAT

Date: November 22, 2017

On the afternoon of 22nd November, 2017 a lecture was arranged in the atrium of SRM-Amaravati. The speaker was Dr. S Harini Priya, Associate Research professor, SRM – KTR who discussed the feasibility establishing a Center of Excellence in Solar Allied Technologies (CoE – SAT) at SRM – AP. With the support of the faculties and students, the centre will develop a solar cooling system of 5 KW capacity in Phase – I. This project will act as an impetus for the development of cost effective cooling system with 25KW capacity (Phase – II) to cater the growing needs of the farmers in the Amaravati region. With the proposed floor area of 140 m2 the cold storage will be able to approximately store 400 tons of vegetables, fruits and dairy products. The lecture was followed by question-answer session at the end.

Dr. Ranjit Thapa, Associate Professor from SRM Research Institute, SRM University in his lecture on 22nd November 2017 introduces the development and need of supercomputers. He explained how the supercomputers are different from a general-purpose computer in respect of computational capacity. He explained how the scientific problems in different length scale and time scale can be solved via simulation in the computer clusters. He introduces how we can do simulation for energy management system for Hydrogen train and also how we can predict the behaviour of electron and atoms inside the materials. Shortly, in current date simulations can provide a fast way to screen the suitable materials and predict the performance of devices in a cost-effective way. SRM University has set up a supercomputer center equipped with servers contain 1870 cores and 16 TB of RAM to execute and solve the scientific problems (http://mysrm.srmuniv.ac.in/hpcc/). He also explained that in the emerging field of knowledge (data) based discovery of materials; the descriptor based approach has proven to be quite powerful in the design of new materials as well as obtaining insights into the chemical mechanisms. Within first-principles density functional theory, his group proposes new electronic structure based descriptor defined as a simple function of (i) the pz occupancy (considering occupied sates) and (ii) the contribution to the density of states at the Fermi Level from pz orbital of an active site of doped graphene. Lastly, he concluded with the note that “there are lots of job opportunities in the area of supercomputers and scientific computing and it is open for every student”.
