Research Interest

  • Dr. Arif Ali Baig Moghal’s doctoral dissertation research focused on “Enhancing the Potential of Class F Fly Ashes for Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Applications”. The concept of ‘lime leachability’ was established and its impact on various geotechnical parameters tested (UCS, CBR, Compressibility and Hydraulic Conductivity Characteristics) were quantified. The toxic trace metal ion(s) release from low lime fly ashes was studied relying on special technique developed for combustion residues by Vander Sloot. Further, the retention uptake capacities of these fly ashes for heavy divalent cations (Cu2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+) was studied relying on the first order kinetics and Langmuir adsorption isotherms by conducting extensive batch equilibrium testing program. The study helped greatly in promoting the sustainable use of low lime fly ashes for geotechnical and geo-environmental applications in India.
  • Developed cost effective sorbents (amending soils with novel activators like nano-calcium silicate) to enhance their uptake capacity for various toxic heavy metal ions and validated the same relying on various leaching models.
  • Extensively worked on lime leachability to validate the durability of stabilization technique for both plastic (cohesive soils) and non-plastic fines (Coal Combustion Products).
  • Established minimum duration of loading increment to be adopted for plastic and non-plastic fines in arriving at fixed settlement rates.
  • Studied the compaction delay effect on lime treated semi-arid soils and quantified the effect on resultant geotechnical properties.
  • Suggested fiber reinforcement strategies to arrest the swelling phenomena in soils.
